Carrying people in a motor home Empty Carrying people in a motor home

Post by GeekTeacher Tue Oct 21, 2014 7:21 pm

Forgive me if this topic has been discussed before, but does anyone know the legality of carrying four people in a three-belted seat motor home, with one person sitting sideways on the 'bench' seat. I've been told it's a bit of a grey area when people are sitting sideways in a van about whether seat belts are required by law. Obviously they are desirable, and even a lap belt is better than nothing, but what does the law say on this? Any help appreciated.

I have my insurance permission and cover to seat 6, 2 in the cab with belts and 4 on the side seats without belts, they did check with their  insurance accessors, I would only have 2 in the back at the most. I could have had 6 as they said the settees were 2 x 3 seaters, but as that was more than 7 It would have to be on a different policy, as normal policies are for up to 7,  no way did I want that, weight for a start, so we settled on four in the rear. Anything after 2007  it is not lawful unless you have rear seat belts.

It is written on my insurance certificate.

Many thanks, that article clarifies the legal position for me.
