any one put 224/15 tyres on a Nuevo? Empty any one put 224/15 tyres on a Nuevo?

I dont like the fact that my tyres are right up to the limit of their load capacity and was considering fitting 225 width instead of the 215 fitted as standard.

225's have a higher weight capacity and could be run at lower pressures possibly giving a softer ride

I see no reason why they wouldnt fit - I suppose there is an outside chance of the fouling the rear wheel arches.

But has any one actually done it?

I haven't, though I have fitted different size tyres to the Trooper than those fitted from the factory.

I don't think anyone can say definitively unless you state the original and intended profile, because the radius/circumference depends on both.

But I doubt you will get many problems as long as you stick to the commonly-used sizes. For example, going from 195/70R15 to to 235/60R15 only makes a couple of percent difference to the overall diameter on the road, which is very unlikely to get you into trouble, and the extra width is very unlikely to be an issue on any van.

My personal preference is for tyres with taller sidewalls - typically you get a slightly less responsive feel at the steering wheel, but the extra comfort over potholes is worth it IMO!

What load rating are the current tyres? Various load ratings are available in the same profile size.

that is going up 4 sizes which probably isnt safe a rim has a maximum and minimum width of tyre it will safely hold  a 6.5J for example will only carry a tyre between 185 and 215

Every 215/70 that I have looked at - and I have looked at many -  has the same 107/109 load rating

If you can suggest a 215/70 - 15 with a higher rating Im all ears!

Might be worth having a word with your insurance company they might class it as a modification.

I wasn't suggesting that you do it! I was just pointing out that the normal practice is to alter the profile as the width changes, which means that you are not likely to experience big changes in rolling radius, which means that the speedo calibration, for example, won't be adversely affected.

For your 215/70 15C I can't find a higher load rating. You say the 6.5J rim, presumably your size, won't take above 215, so will 225 be OK? You mention running at lower pressure which will reduce the safe load capacity regardless of the rating. The Continental 225/70 has 109/107 and a 112/110 ratings. The 112/110 has an increased load/axle of 180kg at same pressure and the same load at 0.3 bar less pressure. any less pressure and the load/axle is less.

When I contemplated changing from 15 to 16 inch wheels I used  the calculator on  (willtheyfit.com)  you can alter the various parameters and it will calculate potential speedo errors etc.
On the web there also seemed to be variations in the maximum recommended  tyre width for a given rim width I'm not sure where you would find a definitive answer.
Anyway hope the calculator may be some use.

As far as I can tell the rims are 7J which will accept a 225

you can alter the wheel rolling diameter so long as the speedo never under reads - it cant read 55 when you are doing 60 or the speedo isnt out by more than 10%

Im more concerned about will 225s fit without hitting the bodywork, Im happy about the front which will happily take 16 inch rims and 225s its the rears Im worried about as it is the rear wheels are tucked up inside the wheel arch and is quite tricky to remove  and I dont want to make this situation any worse which is why I have ruled out (for the time being at least ) 16 inch rims

Im not terribly keen to go out and buy four new tyres only to find at motorway speeds the rip the rear wheel arches off!

On the Continental Tyre Manual (Copy in Factsheet Section)

215/70 on 7J tyre width is 235, diameter 695.

225/70 on 7J tyre width is 242, diameter 709.

ie 7mm wider, 3.5mm closer to wheel arch, and 14mm higher., 2% increase in actual verses speedo reading.

They will fit OK, and provided your speedo is not spot on, speed should be OK.

The speedo must not underread and not read over by 110% plus 6.25 mph.

A qicjk update  - I lost my nerve and stuck with the 215s (I know I'll regret it!)
