Gas on when driving???

I have always turned off the gas at the bottle before driving the MH as this is the safest and hi recommended option.
The other day I was talking to a fellow AS owner who said not necessary to do this as there is a solenoid valve fitted in the line that closes when the engine starts.
Can any of you knowledgeable people confirm if this is correct please

It's only correct if your van is fitted with Truma Crash Sensor regulator.

Is that a standard fit on factory fitted refillable  tanks

I have a refillable tank and don't have a crash regulator but then my van is a 2010 so it may depend on age.

Paul - as I understand it the crash sensor regulator turns off the gas if it receives a physical shock - ie it has a g-sensor. I did not think that it has any form of solenoid or electrical connection to switch off when the engine is running.
Youn r conclusion is correct, though - it IS safe to leave gas on with that kind of regulator. I believe that they also have a mechanism that shuts the gas off if the pipework, flexible or rigid, develops a significant leak.
My assertions may be incorrect as, like you, I just have a normal regulator which is not crash or leak safe.

The Truma one does cut off if a line breaks or shock impact over about 20kph.

 Reading this it suggests that ALL motorhomes constructed after 01/07 must be fitted a similar device.

Reading that link, you could well be right. I'll have to get underneath and see if I have the green reset button. I asked the question on handover and was told I didn't have that regulator but we all know how much the guys doing handovers know so it could be I have that regulator after all. So why do we switch all the internal gas taps off before driving?

A safety shut-off device must be provided that prevents gas from inadvertently escaping if a line breaks in the event of an accident is ONLY a requirement for vehicles in which the converter specification permits the operation of a liquid gas heater while driving.

Hi All
As we were away for an extended weekend when I raised this question I have just got home and did the following test
MH stopped and engine off
Turned gas bottle on and lit a cook top element
Started engine and waited for it to go out, probably left it going for 2-3 minutes
Then I turned off the gas at the bottle
Cooktop flame went out in under 10 seconds
Answers my question and I will not be driving with the gas on!!!!

As devices sometimes fail and from a safety point of view, it is such a simple task with little effort to turn the gas off at source. Simply done, while doing last minute checks before driving off.

I can't see my wife frying bacon and eggs, while I'm driving over the Seven Bridge, so why leave it on.

My new to me van, allows the use of the heating in the rear of the van whilst travelling, but has only has belts in the front, so pointless really.
