No Jack supplied with Stanton. Empty No Jack supplied with Stanton.

Post by Dare-devil-dennis Wed Nov 22, 2017 1:56 pm

Picked up our new Stanton on Saturday. VERY happy with it.

I tried to register the tracker but discovered the fuse had not been fitted. On advice from AS, I located the fuse holder and fitted the fuse. While doing this, I noticed the Mercedes supplied jack was not present in the compartment in the floor below the glove box.

Checking with the dealer and Autosleepers, I am told that as there is no spare wheel, the jack is not supplied.

This kinda misses the point that If I am travelling with family or friends, (which we often do) I might not want to wait for 3 hours for the AA or RAC to come out to me. I would want to take the wheel myself to get it repaired.

How much does it save ordering the Mercedes cab/chassis without a jack for only Santon models I wonder?

I am advised I can purchase a Mercedes bottle jack if I want.

Am I right in thinking that to use the emergency repair "GOO" the weight of the vehicle has to be taken off the punctured wheel?

Thanks for advice and observations

I think most MB based models are supplied without jack/spare wheel. Use of the sealant does not require the wheel to be jacked up. Once sealant injected drive vehicle immediately to distribute the sealant. All covered in the MB Owner's manual.

Lots of MB Sprinter jacks on ebay.

Do you need any silver screens?

Over the years we have had many puntures, both in UK,Europe and Morocco. We have always called out our insurance company, never had to wait more than an hour and the company called out have never even got the jack out from under the seat. The consensus of opinion is that the jack provided is not adequate to safely lift a loaded motorhome.

We dont even take it with us any longer. We have a bottle jack that we took to Morocco but the company who came out to us then used their own proper equipment so we dont take that either.

We would have been stuck without a spare wheel however and would not buy a van without. If you have alloy wheels don’t forget the felt bag of unidentifiable metal discs provided new with the van . They are to attach your alloy wheel to the underfloor carrier when the spare has been put on.

Good advice Quilter - I would always carry a spare and would always call the breakdown company before attempting it my self.

Our Stanton came with a jack but no "goo" in Dec2014. There is no spare wheel and no underfloor carrier, there is no room, unless special smaller water tanks have been fitted, from memory and extra £1600, or so.

I fitted a spare wheel on a modified towing bar- check the archives.

Don't forget, if you have alloy wheels and a steel spare, you will need to purchase a shorter set of bolts to fit it.

When some dear soul wrote off our front tyre ( on an alloy wheel) by jamming a screwdriver into it at a service area near Bilbao 2 years ago, the rescue service changed the wheel for our steel spare with no problems.

The only snag was that the gizmos to attach the damaged alloy wheel to the spare wheel carrier under the van were in the loft at home, unidentified, in a neat felt bag as provided by AS ( unlabelled). We had to have the dirty, damaged wheel in the van with us en route to the garage where, luckily, they had a camper tyre which they fitted to the alloy wheel and then replaced the steel spare under the van.

We had no shorter bolts but there was no suggestion of any being provided by the rescue service man.

But you don't have a MB do you? MBs require different length bolt alloy/steel. Fit the Alloy ones on a steel wheel and the hub won't turn or is wrecked.

I don't actually know what an " MB " is; apologies for butting in, I assumed all alloy and all steel wheels were the same.

I have a Devon too, came with spare wheel and jack. I have used the jack when I fitted air bags on the rear suspension. Lifted the van no problem.

Spare wheel is slung underneath the rear of the van on a drop down rack.
