water pump Empty water pump

Post by tikiti Mon Apr 27, 2015 3:48 am

I have an AS "Worcester" model.  Just recently, the water pump stopped working and blew the fuse. I  checked it out and found that the wiring had shorted out causing the pump to burn out.  Upon investigation, it was found that water had entered the poorly insulated wiring and caused the spade terminals  to short out, hence burning out the pump.
The wires at the spade connections had only been wrapped around with insulating tape, which is very poor, as it is in the same area as the front wheel compartment. At times, on wet roads, there would be considerable water pressure in that area. No attempt had been made to protect the terminals adequately.  There must be products on the market which would ensure  waterproof connections. Has anyone else experienced similar problems?

I've not had that problem but the connectors featured in the thread above will do the trick. You can have connector blocks for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 wires.

I don't understand this bit, ''water pump in the same area as front wheel compartment''?

The whale submersible pump is in the freshwater tank that is mounted beneath the floor on the nearside of the van behind the front wheel. The wire connections to the pump will be in the wiring loom under the floor exposed to spray from the front wheel.

I have had a similar problem with the poor waterproofing of under floor wiring with respect to the inline connector for the freshwater level indicator causing the contacts to corrode to the extent that one actually snapped.

Ah, I keep forgetting about the latest fad of using submersible pumps instead of the 'old' tried and tested long lasting shurflos.
