ceiling laminate strip Empty ceiling laminate strip

Post by Ailsaj Mon Jan 03, 2022 1:05 pm

Hi - We got our 2017 Autosleeper Nuevo EK last October and have been tweaking it ever since  up! - well, that's what you do isn't it! One of the things bugging us was the peeling laminate strip which covered the join in the ceiling wallpaper. We glued it....and glued it again.....but stubbornly it refused to grip tap_fingers.  Him-indoors had the great idea of replacing it with a strip of wood, stained to match the cupboards and, as the woodworker, it was up to me to execute it.  We got a 2m length of thin wood, slightly rounded at the edges, from B & Q - 2.5cm wide x 0.5mm deep. I used a light oak stain which took two coats to match the wood interior of the Nuevo, followed by a coat of matt varnish. Once this had fully hardened for a couple of days I lightly sandpapered it and applied a finishing coat of furniture polish with fine wire wool - it buffed up beautifully.  Very carefully I pulled off the laminate strip on the ceiling and applied a contact adhesive along the join line. (I didn't put glue on the strip of wood as, because of its finished length (210cm) it had to be jiggled and bent and put in at an angle above the wall cupboard and would have made a heck of a mess with glue on it!). Job's a good 'un as they say and we're really pleased with the results.[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Looks very good indeed. I think it is nice to do these little jobs this time of year. I absolutely hate having a day where I don't achieve something

Hi - thanks for looking at this. I pretty much think we're done tweaking for the time being - until something else pops up! Like yourself, I like to keep busy and can always find something to do - until the weather perks up and we can get oot and aboot once more!. Stay safe out there.

PS You say in the text that your van is 2017, but in the profile on the side the vehicle year is 2008?

I think I will be copying your idea when it’s get a bit warmer.

I also have a 2017 Nuevo EK and each year as part of the AS habitation check they re stick it (normally lasts a few months)

As it is out of warranty, time for your modification I feel

This is an AS warranty job as we discovered but remember if you Haven't transferred it from the previous owner if applicable you won't qualify.  6 years I believe is the warranty period.

Correct

And at the last three habitation services completed by a AS dealer it has been restock

Unfortunately it seems when we get any hot weather the strip curls and pulls away from the ceiling.

They now remove the strip and staple a plastic profile over the join then clip on the domed top piece and the plastic is colour matched which is all very neat. They do all visible tape and internally in cupboards plus bathroom.

I notice your van is 2015 … have you had this done ? If so was it a warranty repair as it’s a known ongoing issue ? Appears to be a viable solution at long last.

That's what I like about Autosleeper - they seem to be continually tweaking themselves and clearly have recognised that the old laminate strip is a problem and come up with the solution. We didn't have the AS warranty transferred when we purchased our van last year but as we got it from SMC in Newark it wouldn't have been a viable trip for us to do in order to have it fitted - we live in North Devon so not exactly local -  hence my mod!

At the factory they are flexible enough to say pop in if you're passing!  For a small job like that.

New models don't have a join on ceiling at all, one piece ceilings now.
