Electricity contract renewal Empty Electricity contract renewal

My contract is due at the end of December so started to look at alternatives.

One of the questions asked by other suppliers is what is the existing contract called and was presented a list of options

Scottish Power has approximately 380 different contract schemes! confused0

My current supplier (Avro) is the same - they seem to rename every tariff, every month.

The other thing that (almost) caught me out is that if you put the start date as after the end of your current contract (as most people would), the price comparison site assumes that you revert to your existing supplier's standard tariff, so it always looks like you will make a huge saving, even though your existing supplier would never actually offer you their standard tariff upon renewal!

Incidentally, Avro have been pretty good at not trying to screw their existing customers - my renewals with them have been very competitive for the couple of years that I've been with them.

The thing that annoys me the most about all this is that you're not choosing an electricity provider at all.

You're literally only choosing a billing provider!

..... except in Wales: Dwr Cymru, our water provider - and they've got plenty of raw material! - is a not-for-profit organisation, so no money is paid to corporate or individual shareholders. The difference between its receipts and its outgoings (in any other company, its net profit) is invested in the organisation's activities. I pay £1.3689 per cubic metre for water, and £1.6531 per cubic metre sewerage. There's also a standing charge of 25p per day. That works out at £20.50 pcm for 2 occupants.

Don't know how that compares with utility providers in other parts of the UK, but it seems fair enough to us.

What also annoys me is all these companies have various tiers of management and advertising budgets which we all ultimately pay for.

Maybe, Micky, but you get the better weather.

On the other hand, our water tastes a lot better than Cambridgeshire's!
