Nuevo spare wheel access Empty Nuevo spare wheel access

Post by Mr Paddy Sat Jul 21, 2018 12:35 pm

I can lower the spare wheel to the ground relatively easily using the cable mechanism but the length of the cable gives poor access, so I cannot see how to remove the bottom plate and use/check the spare wheel.
I can loosen the plate by removing a plastic covered nut - does the plate slide through the hole in the wheel or do you remove the cable?

My 2014 nuevo has an extended air tube from the tyre to rear wheel arch ,no need to drop the spare .

Ours has too, but he wants to know how to get it out in case he needs to use it.

My suggestion would be to call the RAC - or whoever. Those wheels are very heavy and bulky, specially when wrestling with them in such a confined space.

There was a time when I could have managed it, and at 63 Mr Paddy still might, but I couldn't any more!!

Hi Coljen this thread is about spare wheel access you might want to re-post it,, but while we are on the subject check the underside for corrosion, the spare wheel carrier can corrode if not looked after, check under the cab steps as they get a battering from salt spray, ask for service records and pay particular attention to water ingress reports.
Do a search on the DVLA website for MOT History as it will tell you any fail reports and you can check the mileage is consistent.
I’m sure if you post up on a general thread you will get plenty of valuable advice.

I read on a post somewhere that the spare wheel carriage was so corroded that they had to cut the mechanism off and get a new one made, I would question the MOT station that passed it as the spare wheel would have to be removed from the carriage to check the tyre walls.

Nuevo spare wheel access Empty Nuevo spare wheel removal

Post by ColinCamper Tue Sep 11, 2018 12:28 pm

Maybe a little late in the day, but when we bought our '59 plate Nuevo I thought I would check the spare. Very awkward, the wheel needs to be supported on a block of wood so that it is tilted to allow the centre plate to thread through the centre of the wheel. Then you need to slide the wheel out which is a game in itself. Maybe place a plastic fertilizer sack or similar under the wheel to aid sliding it out. I have only done this once and don't intend to repeat!

I too had a great deal of trouble with this, the center plate is slightly off round and when properly aligned (and with a bit of jiggling) will slip through the hole in the wheel

Thanks for that - will add plastic sacking and bits of wood to the rest of the rubbish that I carry around - I managed to get the wheel out myself just before going on holiday - the knowledge was required so I can let the AA chap know what he's up against!

BTW I used the jack to support the spare during the removal process - saves carrying around allsorts of bits abd pieces to do the job and you will have the jack out any way

Just reading this but can’t find on the search how to remove spare.
Can someone tell me where to find the bolt to be able to lower the spare?
I see in my handover folder there is a bar about 6” Long which I presume I might need to get the spare down.
Sorry it’s all new to me & it wasn’t explained when I picked the van up.

As far as the original post is concerned, Gromit's advice to Mr Paddy is wise: the spare is very heavy and awkward to extract. Mr Paddy doesn't say the date of manufacture of the Nuevo; if it's post 2014 (narrow headlights) then the retaining plate which holds up the spare on the wire does indeed come out of the hole in the centre of the wheel - with difficulty. There should be spare bolts for securing the metal wheel in place of the punctured alloy one; the alloy goes back on the wire with the additional plate which should be stored with those steel bolts.
Now do you see why it's best left to the Rescue fitter?!!

Can't answer Tigerbadge because mine is post 2014; on mine, you use some interconnecting tubular sockets (supplied with the tools) which are inserted to the spare's retaining wire from under the O/S of the vehicle, whereby to lower the spare.  I've done it (and spare removal) once, as a dummy run in ideal conditions. Never again!

We have a A/S Broadway but it’s probably the same carrier as yours.

In the tool kit found under the passenger seat you’ll find a metal tool about a foot long with a 5 sided key on one end and a 21mm hex on the other end, this tool with the standard wheel brace fits into the chassis mounted lowering mechanism found near the rear o/s mudflap.
The underside of the wheel is held to a bracket with a 21mm nut (the same size as your wheelnuts) this single nut often rusts on unless the thread gets a little grease !

It helps to drive the o/s wheel onto a block of wood to give a few inches more room to work.
A nice dry day is best for a practice run at home.

The below is copied from an A/S owners handbook

Removal
a. The spare wheel is located under the rear floor of the vehicle.
b. The toolkit is stored in a case located under the front passenger seat.
c. Lower the spare wheel using the base vehicle winding mechanism accessible inboard behind the offside rear wheel. Locate the jack winder into the mechanism and turn.
Replacement of Spare Wheel
a. Replace wheel on retention wire.
b. Turn winder to pull cable and tyre back into stored position.
c. Replace tools in toolkit.

Nuevo spare wheel access Empty Be very careful.

Post by mcalid Thu Jan 24, 2019 12:34 am

We recently had a flat on a dangerous corner of road so we called a mobile tyre fitter to help us out as we are both pensioners and not inclined to wrestle with inaccessible spare wheels on our 2008 Nuevo.
He lowered the spare with what appeared to be an impact driver and when he was finished I asked him not to replace the flat as I obviously wanted it repaired.
When it was repaired it transpired that the worm drive on the wheel cradle had been stripped, presumably by the impact driver.
The replacement unit cost over three hundred pounds.
A lesson learned.
The cradle is liable to corrosion despite being sealed, treat it with caution and not power tools.

That is. a very cautionary tale. If the winding mechanism is vulnerable to corrosion I would have expected that its operation should be part of habitation or mechanical service but don't think it is.
Note to self: Check operation of cradle before next journey

Mcalid, a new carrier has just been fitted on mine just before I purchased it.
So fingers crossed they have greased it all up when fitting.

[nspiredron and Tigerbadge.
Be aware that the winding unit for the cradle is sealed but the mechanic who fitted my replacement assured me that he had managed to squeeze grease into it.
Fingers crossed and we should check it once in a while.
Best Regards.
